In 21st century everything is being shifted to digital. Internet is a integral part of our life. What, where and how we eat, sleep and prefers everything is available on internet. You can’t hide from internet. In this era digital privacy is of utmost important. If someone has access to your mobile phone it means that person has access to your personal life. There is people who are very concerned about their privacy. They do not want their private moments to become public. It is very hard when everyone likes to post everything on social media.
So when users are conscious of their privacy and how their personal data is being used big giants have to think about that and should be careful when drafting their policies regarding user data and privacy. Few days ago WhatsApp generated their new policy regarding the privacy of its users. So now Facebook can access the data of the WhatsApp users and can sell to third-party businesses.
Many people have just pressed the “Agree” button without giving much thought to it. But now when people have raised their question about this WhatsApp is in a deep problem. Rivals of WhatsApp have gained many users right after this update and their share prices have jumped up. Amidst this Elon Musk who is a very prominent figure, he tweeted, “Use Signal” which is another messaging service. Signal also got a boost in their user database.
It is ethically and morally wrong to share someone’s data with another person or company. Facebook bought WhatsApp in 2014 for 22 billion so from a business perspective how Facebook will generate this money from WhatsApp. In 2014 WhatsApp assured they will not show any kind of ads and at that time people voiced their concerns. Now in their new policy, they have changed the language and said they are not showing any ads right now but if they do they will inform their audience in the future. So people are being angry at this statement of WhatsApp.
However, WhatsApp chats are end to end encrypted and they still will be. End to end encryption means no one else will have access to your personal communication other than the two parties who are doing the conversation. This end to end encryption will still be applied and no one at WhatsApp will have access to this. But your metadata and information about the phone will be gathered by WhatsApp and eventually shared with Facebook. The more concerning thing is not it will only be shared with Facebook but also with third party businesses with which facebook does business with.
Everyone has to be very careful about their privacy and you have to use alternative applications for this and your privacy would not be compromised.
